Whiskywarehouse Belgium is run by Eric Vermeire, whisky ambassador of the year 2012. This 12 Year Old Caol Ila, from a sherry cask, was bottled for them.
Lovely greasy nose with typical ashes and soot, but also quite a bit of sweet fruit. Sultanas, apple and oranges. Olive oil. Almost rotting wood (which is a plus!).
Sturdy attack with quite some spices. Almost creamy. Butterscotch candy and citrus fruit go hand in hand with ashes and seaweeds. Nice salty edge. Goes back and forth between sweet and salty. Great balance. No water needed.
Nice long finish on nutmeg and cinnamon.
I have said it many times before and I will gladly say it again. Caol Ila (almost) never disappoints. Around 60 EUR. Thank you, Jan!
