Did I tell you I have never been disappointed with a Caol Ila? This is not the first for Malts of Scotland. In fact, they have bottled quite a few. There was a wonderful 33 Year Old in their spring release earlier this year. This one if a whole lot younger, but still a very nice age, of course.

At first I get some iodine, brine and oyster sap with a touch of peat. But the peat is very soft. Rocks in the surf. The sherrycask does what it does best: add dark associations. Raisins, dades, some caramelized apple and cake. Parafin, too, giving it a lot of weight. Very complex nose and very enjoyable.

On the palate, it is again the coastal character that shines. Brine and peat square. Lots of smoke. Deliciously sweet, too, with again the dark fruit from the sherry cask. Very creamy.

The finish is medium in length and smoky, with the emphasis on the sweetness that slowly, but surely, allows the oak to seep in.

Another wonderful Caol Ila, that I am keeping in the cabinet until autumn arrives. Heart-warming.
