This Caol Ila was bottled this year in honour of the 20th Anniversary of this independent bottler from Treviso, Italy, named Wilson & Morgan. It is a distillate from 2000 and very pale, but the room fills up with the wonderful nose as soon as I pour it.
The nose is not very peaty, though. It is quite soft. A lot of citrus, peel included. Light on ashes and tar. Reminds me a bit of the Caol Ila 2000 from Archives, but much more docile. That is most likely due to the lower ABV. Nevertheless, a very pleasant nose.
Initially sweet on the palate, it soon becomes spicy and quite peaty (in contrast to the nose). Wet stones, ashes, smoke mackerel follow up after a hefty helping of honey and citrus that started it off. Utterly drinkable.
The finish is rather short and sweet.
Great entry level whisky for someone who has yet to get to know Caol Ila, one of the most underrated Islay distilleries. Around 44 EUR. Thanks, Jeroen, for the sample.
