It really pays to clean out your sample cabinet from time to time. Look what I found… an old Caol Ila from the Old Malt Cask series from the era when the Laing brothers still ran the company together. This 21 years old Ileach from 1990 has been in the bottle for over 8 years already.

Very aromatic nose on apfelstrüdel, pineapple on the barbecue, famer’s butter and mildly burnt cake (yes, I have some experience with that). Some green banana. Almond shavings. Just a whiff of smoke. The maritime notes play second fiddle and that makes this Coal Ila very attractive.

The arrival is surprisingly soft. But now the distillery character shines. The sweet notes are joined (and overcome) by a lovely smokiness, sweet peat and some celp and liquorice. Some ginger and soft pepper turn your mouth nicely warm.

The finish makes it picture perfect: bittersweet, spicy, smoky and absolutely delicious.

Fantastic, sweet Caol Ila. A dessert in my book.
