This young Caol Ila is only six years old. It was distilled in the autumn of 2008 and bottled in the summer of 2014. It is a vatting of two bourbon casks. It was labeled ‘Young & Feisty’. I am sure i twill be just that.
The nose is wonderfully sooty and dirty, with loads of maritime elements like seaweeds, oyster sap and a hint of smoked mackerel. Peppermix, potpourri, potato skins and olive oil precede some white fruit and limes. This might have well have been a Ledaig.
Good body, nicely oily. Perfect continuation of the nose: soot, citrus, ashes, apples and pears with a big helping of pepper. The peat is unmistakable and offers quite some smoke.
The finish might have been a bit longer – although it is wonderfully smoky! – but I am not saddened.
Young and feisty, indeed. Young Caol Ila, just like young Ledaig, is simply gorgeous!
