Caperdonich, a distillery from the 60’s building on the heritage of a long forgotten Speyside predecessor. Today with the single malt craze it would be unthinkable that another distillery would close its doors. But not so long ago in 2002 Pernod Ricard closed its newly acquisitioned distillery, sold it to Forsyths, who in turn knocked over the last remaining buildings and sold the internal fittings. That’s why The Belgian Owl distillery, just 30km as the crow flies from my home, now owns two of their stills. A little part of Scotland within driving distance! In 2013 The Creative Whisky Company (a bit cocky right?) released this expression of Caperdonich. Metal design artist Tony Koehl

Description: matured in a bourbon cask #121137 for 20years, selected by David Stirk and bottled at 52.2%

Nose: this nose seems to be uncertain of what it wants to be: candied sweet, mellow or grainy,… central are notes of honey and beeswax, hot cereal biscuits, with fruity notes of charentais melon, and cherry pits lurking at the bottom;

Mouth: a creamy full body, along a rough palate of marzipan with an alcoholic sting, some apple, a touch of nutmeg, and honey.

Finish: ending strong with a whiff of vanilla and a gush of black pepper in the tail.

Verdict: A nice layered nose, a difficult but nonetheless interesting palate and a finish like sticking your tongue in a tub of black pepper grind. I had a really difficult time placing this and making out if it was to my liking. In the end it was intriguing enough to keep my attention and warrant a good score.

I have a 1992 DT Caperdonich in my cabinet and wonder how that will taste. Is it only the expressions from the 60s and 70s that are so wonderfully fruity?

Not sure, haven't been able to try a real old Caperdonich. I've got two more bottles by Berry Bros from 1992 in storage for the future. Maybe I can dig up an older samples somewhere, what would be realy interesting is to get a taste of a peated Caperdonich
