A little over a year ago, I discovered this Caperdonich at a tasting. Thanks to my whiskybuddy Chris, I was able to secure a big sample, which I gladly will try again today. After all, this is Caperdonich 1972, a great year, maybe even the best, for this Speysider. It was bottled for the French retailer La Maison du Whisky.

The nose starts extremely fruity with citrus in the lead. Oranges, tangerines, grapefruit, lime. Fresh as lemonade, actually. The second whiff brings banana and pineapple to the party. Strawberries! A nice fruit salade. After a few moments it becomes somewhat drying and mildly floral. At the third whiff, I even get some struck matches and apple cake. Hints of tea. Very complex.

It is nicely creamy and silky soft. Fruitbomb! Absolutely no bite yet well seasoned. White pepper, nutmeg and cinnamon. Candied ginger too. It becomes a little bitter as if from over infused tea, but never drying. Oranges and tangerines go back and forth. Some smoke. Grand.

In the wonderfully long and spicy finish, I get more tangerines and quite a bit of tannins. Perfectly balanced, no kidding!

Boy, this really knocks my socks off. This is Enjoyment with capital E! I daresay this is the best Caper I have had so far.
