Well, I am not a huge Chivas Regal fan, but i have had a bottle of the Chivas 18 year and it was wonderful. If that is any sign as to the 21 Royal Salute, I'm sure it will be great.

It's one of the best blends I've had, with a high malt content. It's very refined and subtle. On the other hand, in your profile you say you like Talisker, Lagavulin, Ardbeg (all not so subtle) so it might not be your cup of tea.

Your reviews are much more telling than the list you claim as your favorites. Drink the Royal Salute 21. Clearly your brother has good taste and wanted to show you some brotherly love.
If you decide to shun your brother's thoughtful gift let me know and I'll swap you an Ardbeg 10 for it.

I'd agree and say drink it! It is a pretty good blend and in my opinion it tastes far better after being opened for a couple months. You can check out my review here: connosr.com/reviews/royal-salute/…

Thanks guys , I have seen the error of my ways , it is indeed a thoughtful gift and one that I will enjoy. I think I will open it when he visits during christmas. I have always been the beneficiary of my brothers gifts at Xmas , They have included JW Blue label, Talisker 18 and Macallan Fine Oak 15 , to name a few over the years. Merry Christmas to you all and may Santa bring you the dram you have been seeking.

@WhiskyNotes I stumbled upon a bottle of royal salute in my dad's collection, it would easily be around 15-20 years old bottle which is un-opened. From your experience is it still safe to drink the alcohol? Is there a way to test the alcohol if its spoilt?

@rags211
Assuming it has been kept unopened in a relatively neutral environment the whisky should be drinkable. 15-20 years is not a long time. What you might want to do is get a bottle of the same, more recently bottled expression and compare, or find a friend with one and have a comparison tasting, as blends, like malts, change over time.
My children will, if they grow to appreciate Scotch, have access to bottles that have been slumbering for decades ( I have a couple that are 20 years old now) by the time I pass them on (or is that by the time I "pass on"?). Before that, I'm sure that by the time I get to some of my bottles they will be several decades old. It's an exciting prospect.

@rags211 my old man gave me a bottle of Royal Salute 21 which he bought in the late 1980s. I couldn't resist so I opened the bottle and is was gone in no time. It had a sweet musky character... something I have never tasted in a dram. I should have purchased a new bottle and compared the two.... Would be interesting to see how the blend has changed over such a long time period.
@cclward I would definitely keep and drink the bottle!

Happy Holidays to all, Can you guys give me some advice? My brother gave me a bottle of Chivas Regal Royal Salute 21 year old. It was a very expensive gift about 165 dollars. I can't find any reviews of it. Is it worth keeping ? or am I better off returning for some expressions I know and appreciate.
