Coming soon: Gibson's Finest Canada 150

I know nothing more about this whisky than what you can tell from the label, but presumably it'll be released by July 1st at the latest as that's Canada's 150th birthday.

Since it's a 12 YO and it says Rare on the label, I'm assuming it's just a relabeled version of Gibson's Finest Rare, and not a new expression. But since I like that whisky and I like this label, I might just pick up a bottle as a sort of souvenir. Unless they charge a ridiculous premium.

I'm curious to see if others will also release special Canada 150 editions.

You sue it wasn't 150 YO released on April 1?

@Nozinan Hehe, pretty sure. Although that would've been a perfect April Fool's to pull on whisky lovers.

@Nelom,

I believe you are correct. This new CANADA150 label is the 12 Year RARE. Gibson's Finest 18 Year was formerly "RARE" now currently "VENERABLE".

Cute, but they missed the boat on this one. They could have had a CANADA 150 Three Pack Sampler - three Canadian whiskies at 50% alcohol (3 x 50 = 150). The new Northern Border Rare Collection dressed up in red & white would have made a huge splash for Canada day on July 1st.

Rather than start a new thread, I figured I'd use this one to post an image of Wiser's special Canada 150 release. There's 7827 numbered bottles being made available, one for each week of Canada's official existence. No word yet on release date, pricing, or anything else.

@Nelom,

My guess - Legacy with a red label. Price - somewhere between $50 and $84. Can't bottle this juice as Legacy until the Lot No 40 gets more age on it...maybe. The "new" Lot 40 is young and does not contain any malted rye.

Part of a series? I wonder what is next? It should be fun. Dr. Don is rolling out a lot of barrels that were previously off limits.

Somehow I just missed this neat little part of that Wiser's 150 label. Since they're all unique it'll be next to impossible to find your own birthweek or some other meaningful week, but still a fun kind of thing.

Too funny, that's my exact birthday on that bottle!

@mscottydunc Now see if you can manage to snag that bottle.....

Anyone see anything from April 1969?

@mscottydunc If that were my bottle I would've been happy to offer it to you, but it's just a picture I saw on Twitter. They guy who bought it is from Newfoundland.

@Nozinan I don't think it's out in Ontario yet, but when it is I'll keep my eyes peeled.

Did anyone pick up the Wiser's One Fifty yet? @paddockjudge Is it really just re-branded Legacy?

@Mancub, It is not Legacy. It is a blend. I have not yet tried it, but hope to do so.

@Mancub I'll be picking some up tomorrow and will likely try it that evening or some time this weekend at the very least. I'll return with my thoughts after.

Ok, I've had a chance to try One Fifty now and I find it to be very much a Canadian whisky with the traditional flavour profile of Canadian whisky. I suppose that's fitting this particular release. So no, it's certainly not Legacy or even particularly exciting or original either. It's not a bad whisky and I don't regret buying it, especially since it's a commemorative bottle that I'll end up keeping even once it's empty, but I'll not be looking to stock up either.

@Nelom Thank you for your feedback. I guess I wasn't expecting it to be a knock-your-socks-off bottle, but I was hoping it would be a bit more unique. Like you, I still enjoy the commemorative aspect of it, but will maybe set my expectations a bit lower before going in. Thanks for your assessment. Cheers!

@Mancub No problem. Sorry for the somewhat vague description of it. A whisky reviewer I am not, and I envy those who have the connection between palate and brain to precisely and accurately describe what they taste. disappointed

Saw this picture on Twitter. Looks like Crown Royal wants to get on the Canada 150 novelty train as well. Which I suppose is a particularly fitting metaphor for that brand. relaxed

It's already available on the east coast, and will launch in Alberta in June. Time will tell when the rest of the country may see them in stores, but before long I suspect. Beyond that I know nothing more than what this picture can tell us, but my guess is that it's only the bag that's special and the whisky inside is the standard Crown Royal expression. Time will tell.

@Nelom I was thinking of making it so you can embed a tweet just by including the Twitter url in your message. The same for YouTube too (where you have to fill out a separate field at the moment).

This one is from one of the official Forty Creek Instagram feeds, and as you can see they too are only making the outer packaging special. No new whisky, and no new bottle. The art is by Calgary artist Sheila Schaetzle.

@jeanluc That would be a handy feature.

I picked up two bottles of JP Weisers One Fifty today. They are dated July 3 1944 and May 18 1953.
