I see what u are saying and it is a very subjective question. I have done the opposite as u an "grown up" drinking American whiskey and only in the past 3-4 years have I really explored single malts. For me the product inside exceeds the bottle design in many cases (also not in some) but that is my palette. There are times still when I have trouble truly grasping some the subtleties of a great single malt. The bottle is just the container for the spirit ultimately but it does entice us to buy the product.

@Nolinske I think as I taste more American whisky I will begin to appreciate them more. Have to admit, it is a fun journey to discover these whiskies. Those not from the US tend to think JD and Jim Beam when it comes to US whisky. As I read more about the US whiskies I realize there is so many more great whiskies

@PeterG7 i dont know what happened i typed up a big response and then hit post and bam it was gone? Main point was suggesting great bourbons that i wasnt sure if you had tried.
Inexpensive: Old Weller Antique, Old Grand Dad 114, Elijah Craig 12, and Evan Williams Single Barrel
Expensive (for bourbon) : George T Staag, Blantons, Bookers and William Larue Weller

@Nolinske To prevent that in the future, I highly recommend you do what I do whenever I write a post (of any size). Before clicking Post Now, just hit ctrl+a, ctrl+x, ctrl+v. That cuts and pastes the entire post right back into the box. You can do it with ctrl+c for copy, but then if you mess up it's harder to tell, so I use Cut instead.
Prevents the loss of epic posts!
In terms of bottle design - I love a cool bottle. The first Canadian whisky I bought was Crown Royal because the bottle is very nice. In the end, I'm enjoying this Canadian Club Small Batch Classic 12 Year (with a very boring bottle) much more. Yes, it's a marketing tactic, and yes it does work... but try to buy bottles based on what people say, and you will have a much more satisfying experience! :)

For me, The Old Pulteney blue etched Steamer on their lovely old fashioned bottle is a most attractive presentation - I saved a couple of these which serve as cold water containers in the 'fridge and they get more than a few comments.

@A'bunadhman Gotta agree with ya on the Old Pulteney bottles - very unique.
I personally enjoy the bottle shape, and label printing on Balvenie whiskies...Sorta classy, and distinctive.

In my humble un expert opinion the Bruichladdich line of bottles are cool looking especially the Octomore ones. The teal resurrection bottle also falls into this category. I also agree with @A'bunadhman and @FMichael that the Old Pulteney bottles are cool as well. :)

I'm still trying to get my taste buds to like American whisky and it's not from a lack of trying. I've been a single malt fan for many years. However, I have to say, their bottle designs are pretty incredible. A bottle with a horse on top (Blanton's) one that looks like a still pot (Willett) Forrester's (eye catching). Truth be known, I think I'm buying these products because of the design. Have no clue what they taste like...not opened. The marketing strategy is brilliant and it works, at least for me. So, is the product as good as the design?
