You probably noticed: this whiskey was distilled in 1992 and bottled in May 2019, so it should be 27 years old. Yet the label says 11 Year Old. How? Well, Irish whiskey can only be termed such if it actually matured in Ireland, but this cask was already moved to Scotland in 2003 and matured a further 16 years. Weird but there you have it. And Cadenhead does not mind the controversy.

The nose makes is clear that this is a Connemara in disguise. The peat is recognizable, although instead of smoke, I get mostly farmy notes. Then lots of sweetness in the guise of dried fruit. Think pineapple, peach, mango and lime. Oh, this is good!

Good body and immediately mouth coating. You can almost chew this baby. Lots of yellow and dried fruit, but also pebbles and gyproc. I am reminded of Springbank, in fact. Melon, pineapple, mango and lots of peat. Lovely development of smoke. It becomes quite spicy and warms the mouth. Wonderful!

The finish is nicely long, almost piquant, with a great balance between smoke and fruit.

Excellent Cooley that flirts with tropical notes – because of the long maturation, no doubt – but still smoky enough to excite.
