To be honest, I have not yet tried all that many Craigellachie. What I did have did not really blow me away. This malt is important for blends such as Dewar’s White Horse. This bottling in the Provenance series is a distillate from 2003. It is very, very pale.

From the moment I pour the whisky in my glass, the room fills up with a rather unpleasant aroma. No fruit or grain on the nose, but sour cream, sauerkraut and sewer. Even after leaving it to breath for quite a while, it struggles fiercely to offer some fruit. Maybe a hint of apple. Some thym. But not much else. What a let-down!

It is oily on the palate and a little sweeter now. Apple juice and some vanilla slowly emerge, but it is very alcoholic. Prickles. No, it burns a bit. Sweet malt, icing sugar, but very spirity indeed.

The finish turns sour again, unfortunately, but is mercifully short.

What a strange selection to bottle. The palate and finish were not up to standards at all, but the nose was simply despicable.
