You all know them, these bottles of scotch available in supermarkets, literally on the bottom shelf and available for around 10 to 15 EUR. Surely this cannot be good whisky. Or can it? I often say there is not such thing as bad whisky. Only good whisky and better whisky. But is that always true? Let us try this with this Blended Scotch Whisky from Delhaize supermarket. The label contains no info whatsoever. No distillery, no age, not hint of the components malt and grain. Just the ABV and the fact that it is scotch.

Well, nothing much is happening on the nose. Loads of vanilla and caramel and a little bit of oranges, but also a whiff of rubber. Garden hose or something close to it.

Despite the low ABV, this blend is pretty alcoholic. I even have to make a face! The caramel and vanilla return and some lightly bitter Seville oranges sort of make up for things.

Luckily, the finish is mercifully short.

I stand corrected. Bad whisky does exist. This bottling confirms the cliché that bottom shelf stuff is not any good, let alone exciting. Pity.
