Dennis the Menace or Walter the Softy?

Wifie's just returned from a visit to her Mum in Oxford and, as she was flying back from Stansted where there's a World of Whisky outlet, I asked her to bring me back a decent malt (about £40 - £50) for sharing with friends here. I can buy from a reasonable selection in Spain but most are a lot more expensive than in the UK.

Anyway, I had in mind a couple of contenders, but Sue being Sue insisted on choosing the whisky herself (and she's not a whisky drinker, she just like to surprise me (me, who hates surprises)).

Well the upshot is she's put me in a bit of a quandary (that's the ticklish spot midway on the horns of a dilemma): she loves a bargain and WoW had a "buy two, get £10 off" deal so she returned home with a bottle of Ardbeg 10yo and a bottle of Glenmorangie Nectar d'Or. Now I know that I should prefer the rugged, knuckle-dragging Ardbeg to the refined madrigal-dancing Glenmo but I have a horrible feeling that the Nectar d'Or will be the winner. Especially as I've just finished a bottle of Sonnalta which effortlessly swept to the top spot in my personal canon of damn fine drams.

So here's my questions: (1) can Dennis the Menace (Ardbeg) and Softy Walter (Glenmorangie) be friends? (2) Which of the two is, in your opinion, the more 'authentic' whusky (3) Will I go to Hell if I enjoy each one equally?

Apologies to those of you, not brought up on the Beano, who have no idea who are Dennis the Menace or Softy Walter.

Hi @Kalekas, first of all, cheers to Sue for her fine choice in malts ... I have not seen "twofers" on whisky around here :) My response cannot equal the entertaining eloquence of your question, but I'll add my two cents anyway ... to this enjoyable but frivolous question ... as it is clear that you will end up drinking both of them in a short amout of time.

Both malts are among my favorites, but the only thing they have in common is the 46% alcohol content (at least for my 75cl versions). Being a 1-year advanced novice, and really not qualified to comment on authenticity of whusky, my "gut" feeling, even though they are both peers in enjoyability, would go with the Ardbeg. From what I tried so far, Ardbeg is exciting, briney, peaty and seaweedy ... very refreshing; it just has that overall feel of real whisky from the salty and windswept islands. But as another motive, I would also like you to try Ardbeg 10, just to see all the tastes and characters that you will discover, from your unique and discerning perspective :) But don't put away the Nector D'Or ... there is more than one day in a week. There will be a day when you may desire a malt that is orders of magnitude above the Ball Finest ... and you will be in for a lucious special treat ... just try not to feel guilty !

Yes, you will likely make it to hell ... but I've heard that's where they serve all the great spirits ... no ice. See you there :)
