This straight rye contains no corn whatsoever - it's a large percentage of rye with a small amount of malted barley.

The colour is a deep, dark orange with coppery highlights. Somewhat floral on the nose, with mint, eucalyptus, oak, pencil shavings and orange pith. Dark chocolate. Cloves; quite spicy. Fantastic but avoid water as it lowers the volume.

Sweeter on the palate, with honey, more mint / eucalyptus, birch bark and pine. Quite spicy with smoked paprika and cinnamon. Herbal and medicinal - this tastes like it was made in 1860...and I love it! Water adds a touch of dark fruit but still kills the nose.

The finish is a bruiser - long, peppery and mouth-drying, leaving black cherry and wet sawdust. I love rye, and I love this - complex, powerful, endlessly fascinating. One of the best, absolutely unbelievable. Jim Murray scores this a 97; I dock it a touch lower as it doesn't hold water on the nose well. Obviously though - this is incredible.

@talexander, Nice review, I've hear good things about this Rye, it's definitely on my short list to purchase. I'm a huge Rye whiskey fan and all the flavors you described are right where I like them. Although Im not a fan of the pencil shavings. I have read pencil shavings in reviews for years and had never tasted it until I had Jeffersons Reserve, and there it was. If it's not a big component it's not an issue for me.

No, it is not the current release. I should have mentioned that the bottle is a few years old and has been open for some time.

My favorite straight Rye, down to 1.8 bottles from 5 and will order 2+ more when it returns for the annual online LCBO EHT release.

I got a bottle of this last year and while I liked it, I wasn't that impressed given all the hype- I actually poured a dram right now and thought of this review. Some nice woody and rye spices, but not as complex as I like my ryes to be. I wonder how much batch variation there is.

It may just be you don't like it as much as I (or others) do - not necessarily due to batch variation (though I'm sure there must be some).

that is definitely possible. I am mainly just curious if my sample is representative.

I've wondered about differences in batches of E H Taylor Rye also. I have never been very impressed with the one bottle from which I have repeatedly sampled, owned by @Maddie. I would not and have not bought a bottle of it for that reason. I do leave open the possibility that other bottles/batches are different.
