Father's Day

2 13

My wife asked me what I wouId like for Father's Day. I pointed to my whisky. Today, I asked her if she would like me to go out and pick and buy the bottle. She answered in the affirmative. I was determine to go out and get an Ardbeg, but I came across a store in Edmonton this afternoon with Johnnie Walker Double Black. So I purchased it and left it on the kitchen counter still in the bag.

I would much rather have purchased an Ardbeg, but i have this quirk. I like to gather whiskies in sets... I now have Red, Black, Double Back, Green, Gold, and Blue. I only have tasted the red in one of those minature bottles. But some day, I'll do a Johnnie Walker Tasting :) . Oh, yes, I also have Swing

I'd much more prefer the Ardbeg, but as the saying goes "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth". The Blue, Gold, and now Double Black are/were gifts. .

As for Ardbeg... well, I have more Ardbeg than Johnnie Walker.

I was able to sleep in this morning which is 8 am in my house and went downstairs. After being treated like a king by my family and having breakfast outside in the backyard I was given my gifts. A great picture from my son, a wonderful new mug from my daughter, and the family gifts to me were a couple of lightweight fishing shirts and a total surprise a new bottle of Auchentoshan 12yr at the bottom of the bag.
I hope everyone's day is turning out as nice as mine is.

Received a bottle of Nikka Taketsuru 12 year old Pure Malt, as well as a 20cl bottle of JW Black Label. After a relaxing morning at the park with my wife and daughter and an afternoon spent gardening (there is something meditative to pulling weeds), I cracked open the Taketsuru and had a dram with dinner (sushi and Japanes/Chinese fusion - gyoza, crispy spring rolls, etc.).

My wife also got the "whisky" answer to the "what do you want for Father's Day?" question. I told her "something peaty", figuring that we had both recently attended an Ardbeg tasting during the local stop of their Ardbeg Rocket Tour, and she would just pick up a bottle of the Ardbeg Corryvreckan that we had both enjoyed.

Father's Day arrived, and I wake up to find a wrapped tube shaped package sitting on our kitchen counter. Clearly this was a bottle of whisky, but it wasn't an Ardbeg, because their packaging is a box, not a tube! Laphroaig or Bowmore? Nope! I tore open the wrapping to find Benromach on the label. Looking closer, I did see that is said "Benromach Peat Smoke, Batch 4". Okay, not what I was expecting, but I had liked the only other Benromach I had purchased, the 10 year old! She figured if Iiked the Benromach 10 so much, and I wanted something peaty, this seemed an obvious choice to her. Note to self; in the future, be more specific!

As it turns out, the "Benromach Peat Smoke" is very good. It's not a peat monster, but it does have a strong smoky, peaty kick, while balancing that with Benromach's excellent spicy and fruity malt flavor. It was much better than expected. Would I have bought this on my own?No, I would have gotten the Ardbeg! Am I upset my wife got it instead? Not really. As it turns out, it is surprisingly good! An excellent example of a Speyside distillery making a peated whisky that is balanced and reasonably complex. Good stuff!

This makes me wish I was a father so I would have another day of the year to receive whisky beyond birthdays, anniversaries, and Christmas.

So jealous of you guys! Congrats on the good father's day gifts and days!!! Glad you enjoyed them!!

Time to resurrect this thread. Today is the big day.... how are you celebrating Father's day?

Tonight my brother's and my families are gathering at my aunt and uncle's for a BBQ dinner. My uncle has been consuming less Scotch than he used to (we used to have a weekly dram) and I'm driving, so there may not be any whisky today, but I'll be enjoying vicariously through connosr.com

Today I was fishing with my son. Indulging in this passion did not deter my participation in other passions... we fired up a couple of Monte Cristos and I also enjoyed:

I won’t be consuming today, as we’re headed to my mother-in-law’s for a big bbq. I also have work to do tonight, so I need a fairly clear head. Maybe I’ll open my only bottle of Wiser’s Legacy after I’m done working.

My youngest (7 years old) made me a cute painting in which my forearms looked jacked and the sun is wearing sunglasses. I tried FaceTiming my dad, but he’s not around. He’s probably golfing with my mom.

So my eldest son from a brown bag produced miniatures of crown royal apple flavour ?, Dickel Tabasco ??, a small bottle of Jagermister ???, then a nice bottle of Nikka, Coffey grain Whisky, after a day with the family I am sure we will be having a little sample.

The Monte Cristo's were a gift from a generous friend. Initially I believed the package to contain five small Cubans, but much to my surprise and incredible delight the package contains twenty cigarillos... well it did contain twenty...

Thank you my friend! Your generosity is only exceeded by your excellent taste in Whisky.... and friends.

Fairly subdued day yesterday. Was woken by my little lad handing me a card, was presented with an Old Pulteney 12 and then left to play golf while they went to her dad's for lunch. As it happens I ended up playing alone as my friend couldn't make it, so enjoyed a relatively quiet course on a Sunday afternoon (the actual golf was meh but the Club Championship is in two weeks so I used the time to try and iron out a few creases here and there, and there again . . ). Made dinner for the clan later (as usual ha!) and then retired to watch some football and enjoy a malt or two!
