Actually, cheap whisky brakes the bank, it's the expensive whiskies that break the bank!
As a general rule, you usually get what you pay for, but I've found cheap whiskies that were surprisingly good, and expensive whiskies that have given me serious buyer's remorse!

I've never tried Old Smuggler but I love discovering great budget blends! I have had many whiskies which are very enjoyable and also very affordable. And when I happen to get a bad one I don't feel so bad because I'm not out very much money! Unfortunately, like @MacBaker62 I have been disappointed by many higher end bottles!

I am whisky newbie, taste blends only (meanwhile), but I must say, that Old Smuggler is one of my favouritest. I like it more than many expensivest whiskies, because it has "character". In smell and taste I feel wood and cherry, little smoke. In my country, I can buy Old Smuggler for 10 dollars (supermarket discount), so when I want drink something good and have not much money, OS is choice number one.

Wondering whether any of the reviews below are of the white label 43% ABV Old Smuggler available in the UK (for which Ralfy scored it a highly respectable 87 in his vlog# 505) or the more mundane black label 40% ABV OS that is prevalent in the U.S. Haven't tried either but I'd love to get a bottle of the white label.

I have to admit. This lower price Scotch is not bad. It is a blended scotch, so, lets be fair with this whisky. I do not always seek "cheap" scotch...I frankly do not believe in it. I was "dared" to try it....I am pleasantly surprised! I hear it was or is #1 scotch in Argintina...which may mean something or maybe not. For me it was very clean tasting, with a hint of oak and carmel with a long finish of hot vanilla. The tasting notes do seem weak compared to more expensive (better) scotch. This leads me to speculate:are the cheaper scotches not worth it? or are they worth their own right? Scotch to me seems to be far reaching, this makes scotch so unique and genuine as a fine whisky, even when it doesn't brake the bank.
