I've certainly returned flasked whisky back to the bottle. I'm the same as you though, only if I've not sipped directly from the flask.

If you don't drink it when your out, drink it when you get back. Personally I wouldn't return anything to the bottle as flasks will change the flavour of the whisky over time. I would always use a stainless steel flask, not pewter.

@Marcus asked: "Upon returning home, what should I do with the remainder?"
We drink it.
Here's a bit from Ralfy on May 30, 2011, about flasks. It may not answer your question either, but it's a good review for anyone who routinely uses a flask.

I would like to throw a question out to everyone. When my girlfriend and I take a day trip on the weekend, I usually take a flask of one of my favorite whiskies and a couple cigars. We don't always consume all the whisky in the flask. Upon returning home, what should I do with the remainder? We do not drink directly from the flask, so there's no spit or anything in the whisky, so I'm wondering if it would be ok/proper to return what is left to the bottle?? Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
