@nikkaman, you are very lucky with regards to your access to Japanese dram. I have yet to come accross a Japanese dram that wasn't to my liking. If I were in your position, I would start by trying lots of those as they will be much more affordable to you. A couple of suggestions, if I may: Nikka All Malt, The Blend of Nikka, Nikka from the Barrel, Nikka Pure Malt 12 yo, Nikka Yoichi 10 yo and - if you can still find it - Nikka Yoichi 1987 Single Cask.

@markjedi1 Thanks for those suggestions. I've tried a few of them already. Will keep an eye out for the Yoichi's. Cheers, Dan

A good place to read a bunch about Japanese whisky, if you've not found it already, is Chris Bunting's blog Nonjatta. I'm planning a trip to Japan sometime soon and part of my planning is around how to best bring back a suitcase of whisky :)

@markjedi1 Enough disguising of the bottles and some schmoozing with the customs people and...I'd end up with a fine and the bottles confiscated anyway.
Miniatures may well be a part of the plan so far :)

Looking to connect with others who are just starting to get into whisky. My budget isn't huge, perhaps one bottle of sm and one blended - around $50-$60 a month at the moment. Living in Japan means I have access to a huge number of Japanese whiskies which I'm interested in getting around to trying. The scotch choices are somewhat limited, although there are a few chain stores that stock a reasonable selection of sm scotch. Well, if anyone else is starting out on what has so far been a very satisfying journey, I'd love to hear from you. Cheers, Dan
