Have recently done a tasting of the Port Charlotte Scottish Barley and Hazelburn 10yo in Crystal Spey Whisky Glasses. They worked very well, basically a Glencarin with out the base and a bit wider at the bowl. Hazelburn 10yo by far better

The ultimate test of a whisky glass... How does it handle A'Bunadh?

Just got hold of a couple of these sagaform whisky tasting glasses and thoughts to share with the crew. Quite pleasing aesthetically, nice little wobble from the slightly rounded base. Quite like a smaller version of a rum glass I have in the back of the cupboard. Excellent nosing but not quite so good to drink from.

I just received, yesterday, three Túath Irish Whiskey Glasses. Below is a photo of one them next to a Glencairn, so you all can see them side-by-side.

I like the shape and size of the Túath, that I had to order three more. I will be giving one to someone I know who appreciates whisk(e)y as much as I do, so I am sure he will like it.

Well, I must admit. I haven't tried it yet, but that will soon be completed. I am going to pour myself some 15yo Redbreast. It is fitting to use a Irish Single Pot Still whiskey, in an Irish Whiskey Glass.

"It' magically delicious!"

I just remembered I had purchased some Stölzle dessert wine/port glasses as well. I will upload another photo with all three glasses.

Those port glasses are a little tall, but I like the shape.

Yes, they are significantly taller than the other two glasses. I am sure they are not a glass of choice with many people, but it is nice to have an alternative choice to the usual glasses. I am thinking that it will be fun to 'experiment' with various whisk(e)y with the three glasses. Make for a fun tasting.

By the way, have you seen the Túath glass in your area? I only found it by going to the website of the company and discovered a store (yes, one store) in the US that sells them.

I haven't yet, but I might have to give it a go. After buying six Túath glasses, I might have to wait a little while to justify to spend more money on glasses. Plus, going on another Tokyo trip in June, I want to save my money for whisk(e)y. HA!

Have you given up the Glencairn, for the Brilliant Highland whisky glass? Assuming, you use(d) the Glencairn.

@ajjarrett, the Túath Irish Whiskey Glass has a slightly wider bowl than the Riedel Malt Glass...and a funkier base.

Ah, another glass for me to consider buying. By the way, is that a bottle of the 17yo Taketsuru on the left?

I have one in the background of my photo, but it is a bit too hard to see it.

I picked up a Tuath glass recently too. I like it, though it’s definitely bigger than I expected. The shape is nice, the base is perhaps a bit gimmicky. Coincidently I also took delivery today of a new set of four glasses myself - Kentucky Bourbon Trail glasses. Like a squatter Glencairn, I think others have referenced on this discussion already. Looking forward to trying soon.

@ajjarrett, yes, it is Nikka 17 YO. I had three in the bunker. One went to a malthead who craves exotic bottles; in hind sight I wouldn't do that again as the return trade was a bit short. Another bottle went to a friend who responded with Laphroaig 18 YO (Green Canister) and Laphroaig 10 YO CS batch 5 as a show of appreciation. You can travel both ways on the river, but only one direction is against the current...some guys just know how to do it the right way!

It does sound like you got a good deal on the second 'trade.' I must admit, I'm a bit protective of my 17yo Taketsuru, so I don't plan on trading/giving them away any time soon. Of course, if the deal is right, I might be persuaded. Operative word, 'might.'

You're absolutely correct, the base is a bit gimmicky; however, the glass does deliver a very positive experience both with the nose and tasting. So, I am pleased with it. Actually, overly pleased with the glass.

Do you get a good nose from the Kentucky Bourbon Trail glasses? I ask, only because I have never used one.

@ajjarrett, I don't mind sharing, especially since I had enjoyed three or four bottles over the years, although I now wish I had picked up a few more when they were available for $116 CDN. The bottle in the picture is staying put.

Ah yes, looking back at when you could get certain bottles at a very reasonable price. My first bottle of the 17yo Taketsuru was when I was going to Beijing and had a transfer in Tokyo's Narita Airport. I got a bottle of the 17yo Taketsuru for 7500 JPY, just a little less than $75 USD. This was back in the summer of 2015. You can guess how I felt when I returned in January 2016, and they told me that they no longer carry it in the duty-free shops.

@ajjarrett, I certainly can guess how you feel about being shutout on the NT 17YO. I'm happy to have one on the shelf.

I had a chance three years ago to buy some Japanese whisky from a woman who was recently widowed. Some of the bottles going back to the seventies when her husband worked in Japan. Over the decades he collected numerous bottles. Many of the cartons looked to be water damaged. Not knowing the condition of the contents I passed and suggested she take them to auction where she would receive a fair price, much more than I would have offered her. I have no regrets.

I hope you can supply a photo. I looked up the glasses online, and I noticed several different kinds that fall under the category "crystal spey glass," e.g. 'Taster' and the 'Perfect' glass.

Benromach have just launched a glass, inspired by glencairn but without foot, which has a special air-system and which will add 50% "artificial ageing". So, a 12 years old Highland Park will take on all the notes of HP 18 years old and the 21 years old glendronach will become their special single cask release of 32 years!

@ajjarrett the glasses or on this link

lovetiki.com/product/…

They're a little bit smaller than a glencairn at 120ml compared to 175ml.

Cost less than I remembered though at £1.49 a glass. The quality is pretty decent too.

I also brought some of their miniature glencairns

lovetiki.com/product/…

I brought 4 of each and with postage it still only came to less than £20.

I'm not at home at the moment. I'll post a photo of them both with a standard Glencairn when I get home so you can get an idea of size.

@Wierdo Stranahan's malt whiskey distillery in Denver has been using that design for their glasses for a few years now, a mini Glencairn shape w/o a base. A friend visiting the distillery has given me some of these. I like them. They are cute.
