Bladnoch, the recently revived Lowland distillery, profiles itself also as independent bottler by offering single casks at cask strength from a whole range of distilleries to her forum members. This is one of them, distilled on 1st November 1984 and bottled 12th March 2010. The whisky was created at the Glen Elgin distillery in Speyside. It's cask 2852.

On the nose, both sweet and sour fight for supremacy with hints of peach, lime and red oranges (we call them blood oranges in Belgium, which has a nice ominous touch, no?). He is very slightly seasoned with cinnamon and contains a touch of ginger and wax.

I was expecting a sweet dram, but this one really is rather sour. Ginger leads the way, but soon the whisky turns oaky and salty. Wow, this is a surprise – but unfortunately a rather unpleasant one. This does not excite me, I’m must say. Adding water can save the nose a little, but for the palate, all hope is lost.

The finish lingers for a while, but is again dry, oaky and salty.

This is a disappointment for me and shows that age and taste don’t always work hand in glove.
