When Irishman Raymond Armstrong took over the Bladnoch distillery, he could not bottle immediately. To get the cash flowing he bought casks from other distilleries, launched a forum for whiskylovers and catapulted himself as independent bottler with an irondclad reputation (despite the ugly labels; do something about that Ray, will ya?). This 1980 Glen Grant is 27 years old.
The nose is honeysweet and a bit creamy. White fruit with wonderful hints of cardamom, touches of coconut and famers butter. The citrus is there, but way in the back. Soft and accessible.
That continues nicely on the palate, but it does gain strength. The white fruit is still there, but now rather piquant. White pepper with a whiff of cinnamon. A bit zesty. Some oak. Clean. It even boasts a salty side. Nice!
The finish is fairly long on sweet, white fruit, but it is the oak that turns off the lights.
Rather simple, but very good indeed. That is all a whiskylover needs. Thanks for the very generous sample, Bart!
