After a lovely Mortlach, a great Caperdonich comes the best of the three (so i think) – this Glen Grant. Again, a distillery that is not well known to me, and a chance to taste a dram that is older than me by one year (as times goes by, it’s getting harder and harder, and ever more expensive to experience such drams). This one was finished in a fresh Octave cask for 5 more months before being bottled. So, how will this do compared to the other two? let’s dram and see.

Glen Grant 1974 , 36 yo , 50.7% ABV , cask# 411658 , 71 bottles by Men o’Quaich Nose : The nose starts with a big oak influence and also sweet with vanilla , cinnamon. Pine , mint, and wet forest; so it’s not entirely wood and barley. A few dried fruit notes too. Sourish on the edges as in very old wood and also some wood resin. Palate: Very nice balance of oak wood and malt though woodier than the nose .White pepper, zingy ginger and sprinkles of cinnamon spice. Dried fruits on the second wave of flavours with figs, raisins and a nutty feeling. Milk chocolate tops it all, with cocoa powder as a last touch. Superb. Finish : spicy. With coriander and cardamom as well as pepper. The cocoa also lingers.

bottom line:

Great dram. Wood is big yet balanced. Spices are well integrated. This in my opinion is the best of the three. Very good work guys!
