This Caoran reserve has practically the same fruity aroma as the normal 12y, accept that the apples and pears are tempered by some slight smoky, peaty hints.

It's taste on the other hand hasn't got any fruit in it at all. This light bodied dram is built up out of wood, smoke and nuts, with a slight well balanced peatiness underneath.

The slightly bitter aftertaste tends not to stay around very long.

All in all this whisky is a nice try to make a special variation on the normal 12y. Peat, smoke and wood aren't overwhelming, but it hasn't got enough body to convince.

I had been toying with looking at this one, but I may refocus my attention to other malts first. Thanks for the heads-up.

I added the three classic Glenfiddichs to my cabinet (12, 15 and 18 years) and will try those first, before going for anything 'fancy' or 'reserve' (Does that actually mean anything, really? Or is this just marketing?).
