My good friend Igor passed me the last remnants of this miniature bottle. It is fairly old, though not sure exactly how old; 1970s? It is noted as a "pure malt" but this cannot mean "pure malt" in the same way we know it now (ie. as a "blended" or "vatted" malt) - so this is an 8 year old single malt. Of course, Glenfiddich no longer bottles an 8 year old single malt - so this is something unique. Unfortunately, it is a very tiny amount left in the mini, so will write this the best I can!
I don't believe Glenfiddich requires any introduction - it is an iconic distillery, the best selling single malt in the world. While most connoisseurs turn their noses up at Glenfiddich 12, it is a fine introduction to single malts, and I think think their 15 is excellent.
This one has a powerful nose, more so than the 12 - very young and esthery, with pears, apple, lots of malt. Some band-aids and I swear, just a hint of peat; I have no idea if they were peating their malt at the time or not. A good, solid Glenfiddich-style nose, only more so than you might expect.
On the palate, similar profile - very young Glenfiddich but more robust and lively than the standard 12 year old (which I cannot help comparing it to). The finish, however, is practically non-existent, unlike the 12 year old. This sample is far too small for me to add water to.
So a pretty minor entry into my tasting history. It's fine, nothing terrible but nothing to get excited about...but this nose might be a welcome improvement on the standard we have today!
Find where to buy Glenfiddich whisky
@talexander, is this old Glenfiddich malt mini the sort of thing that you find when you clean out your drawers at work?
There might be still more ancient treasures in there from old office parties!
