Glentauchers is another one of those unknown distilleries. A lot has to do with the fact that, bar two, there are no official bottling. All production was destined for blends. If you want to taste this malt, you will have to look at independent bottlers. The Creative Whisky Company of David Stirk is one of those. He marketed this 11 Year Old Glentauchers in his Exclusive Range, which consists of young (8 to 16 year old), but affordable single malts.

The nose is malty and fruity. I mostly get a mix of citrus and pineapple. A lot of caramel. Vanilla as well. Pears on syrup. Cox apples and breakfast cereals. You would be hard pressed to find this complext, but not to find it appealing.

I get more fruit and a lot of spices on the palate. Think nutmeg, ginger and a bit of black pepper. But there is also a tinned sweetness, like the syrup that tinned pineapple is kept in. Again the white to yellow apples, pears and vanilla.

The finish is long and sweet.

This is a very simple, but quite nice Speysider. Not bad for a first encounter. But I do realize why this is a typical blenders whisky. It seems to be a bit too simply to stand out as a single malt.
