Glentauchers is one of those unknown malts, hardly available as a single malt, unless you check out independent bottlers. The bulk of production goes into blend, including the famous Black & White, Ballantine’s, Chivas Regal and the like. Wemyss released this in 2013 under the label ‘Liquorice Spiral’, so I am expecting liquorice and aniseed, no? The liquorice spiral is a famous candy. My kids call it candy shoelaces. I do not have a lot of experience with Glentauchers. This is only my sixth. It is very pale.

I was expecting a very sweet nose, but that is not the case. It is sweet, sure, but mostly I get liquorice and aniseed (told you so). I do get a hint of gooseberries and pineapple, but it requires an effort. That gets better if you leave it for a few minutes. Then some Cox apples and pear drops emerge.

The arrival is a bit too soft to my taste. Thin body. It is quite sweet now, but unfortunately it is a chemical candy taste that is not very much to my liking. It does explain the name of the bottling, though. The liquorice and aniseed are still there, but are overpowered. Pity.

The finish is medium long, which is not an advantage. It ends on a spicy deathbed. Think pepper and some aniseed.

Not the best Glentauchers I have tried. The chemical sweetness bothers me.
