Glentauchers is not really a big name, is it? This Speyside – founded in 1897 – creates mostly filling malt for blends like Black & White, Ballantines, Teachers and Chivas Regal. Official bottlings? Barely. So it is always a treat to see indepdendent bottlers selecting a nice cask. Take this Glentauchers from The Nectar which matured for a quarter century! Let’s get to it.

The nose is the perfect mix of honeysweet and umami, with some mashed potatoes on the one hand and a truckload of light brown ‘Graeffe’ sugar on the other. The fruit comes as yellow apples, a single slice of kiwi and some juicy pears. Some green tea and freshly cut grass kick in. This is good, but not yet grand.

On the palate, however, this is one of the big boys. Yellow fruit, icing sugar, lots of oak and woodsmoke. Liquorice and pepper with a big grapefruit zestiness. A lovely bitterness to counter the whole.

The finish is long and far from subtle. Powerful and spicy.

The nose did not reveal that this would be a flavour bomb on the palate. Beautiful Glentauchers.
