I have not yet tried that many Glentauchers and those that I have tried were somewhat hit & miss. An 11 Year Old from the Creative Whisky Company was fish nor fowl while a 16 Year Old from G&M left me disappointed. So I was quite happy to taste the 21 Year Old from Asta Morris, but that one was released on the other side of the world. This 30 Year Old was the big discovery at the recent Spirits in the Sky festival. So I smuggled a sample back to the Whivie HQ to try it at leisure.

Well, the nose starts off wonderfully creamy and fruity. Sweet malt in a jacket of banana, Pink Lady apples, cherries and a hint of marzipan. Vanilla and oak do not stay behind, but are rather subtle. The honey and spices as well. Wonderful.

There is nothing left of the subtle nose on the palate. Ka-boom! Besides the fruit and the spices, my taste buds are bombed by the oak and even some smoke! That was unexpected. Loads of liquorice and pepper. Turns a bit dry and bitter towards the end, but luckily there is more than enough sweetness to keep it balanced.

The long, warm finish leaves your mouth parched.

The nose is its biggest asset without a doubt, but the whole as well is a very nice Glentauchers that does not need any water. Surprisingly powerful on the palate!
