This is not the first Glentauchers bottled by Asta Morris, although the previous release was a lot older (and bottled for the Japanese importer Gaia Flow). This young one from 2009 was drawn from a PX cask for the Malt Monkeys (a whisky club in Belgium). I do expect some dark fruit. And a malt that is a bit quirky. After all, it was ‘Crazy Bert’ Bruyneel who selected the cask.

Ooh, interesting nose! Mix of mashed potatoes and apples sauce, butter in the frying pan, dark beer, pear drops, cherries and beeswax. This does not resemble – at all! – what I have previously tried from Glentauchers. Typically Bert.

It is creamy on the palate with lots of dark fruits, but also a slight bitterness that reminds me of a Guinness and coffee grounds. Spicy too. For some reason, I am overcome with a feeling of autumn.

The long finish offers more of the same. Caramelized apples at the death.

Atypical to say the least. Not for everyone, I fear, but the Malt Monkeys certainly do not fall into that category. Great selection of cask.
