Grand Old Parr is a blend marketed by Diageo. It was named after the Brit Thomas Parr who lived to be a 152 years, according to legend. Born in 1483 and interred in London (where you can still visit his grave in Westminster Abbey) in 1635. The blend was first introduced in 1909 and is popular in South America and Japan. The bottle before me from the eighties shows quite a bit of OBE already, but maybe I can try to get something out of it.

So, okay, up front on the nose sneakers and wet socks. So let me leave it for at least ten minutes. Then raisins, sultanas and caramelized orange peel emerge. Figs too. A lot of caramel, just shy of burnt. Nutmeg, cinnamon, touch of oak and a whiff of smoke for some depth.

It is mouth coating and spicy at first. Immediately very malty with dark, dried fruit. This is upholstered even more with dades and orange zest. Woodspice returns. Something that brings tobacco leafs to mind.

On the long and warm finish, the orange zest and cinnamon stand out.

This is not a bad blend at all, actually. Thanks, Bart!

Recently picked this up, however current editions in the US are at the base 40% ABV. I had recently been in another liquor store where I spotted a gentleman buying this at a $10 higher price than I knew I could get it for elsewhere. I guess I figured that if someone was willing to buy it at such a high price, there must be something to it. Definitely a rich, spiciness coats the mouth and throat at first tasting. Reluctant to add water to a 40% ABV whisky, I have been savoring this blend for the past few days. I don't pretend to be able to capture all the notes previously described but I am certain this is a worthwhile blended Scotch that any whisky lover should enjoy.
