At the end of 2016 Hammerschmiede released to similar malts, both so-called ‘woodsmoked’, one matured on a Pale Cream Sherry cask and the other on a Dark Sherry cask. I am happy to put them head-to-head. Let me start with the Dark Sherry, for it has an ABV that is significantly lower.

Soft nose on walnuts, smoked ham, milk chocolate with praline filling and sultanas. Less sweet than expected, to be honest. Surprisingly salty though, as if from salted caramel or even celp. There is a beautiful trace of woodsmoke as if from a recently doused barbecue.

Nicely oily – almost creamy – and a lot sweeter than on the nose, but the salty element is definitely there, as is the woodsmoke. This is actually quite good, in fact. Some sultanas and plum marmalade, dark honey and chocolate. There is also a sour note as if from candied oranges. Finally some vanilla emerges and becomes quite big. I quite like this.

The medium long finish is again a battle of sweet versus salt, while the smoke slowly clears up. At the death, your mouth is left dry by a bitter note.

Lovely Glen Els, but I was expecting a sherry bomb when reading ‘dark sherry’ on the label. That, it certainly is not. Nevertheless a very interesting release, more so considering the young age.
