@Alanjp, the man you want to hear from is @whiskyshiba. He knows what is and is not available in L.A. and what would make a great import.

@Alanjp, www.moodiereport.com/category.php That site has some info on what's new and available at all duty-free/airport shops for whiskys and alcohol. They had a Glenfiddich 17yr and a 31yr available a few months back, but only at Munich airport.
In L.A., we pretty much have everything you have across the pond. We also have excellent private whisky/cognac trading clubs if one wants to procure a rare and old whisky. And due to our diversity, all of the ethnic supermarkets bring in great whiskys from their countries. The japanese food marts have excellent selections on rare and hard to find Nikka, Ichiro, Yamazaki...etc. Sometime the Italian marts have some rare and wrongly priced Macallans, Balvenies, 'Froygs.
But, Its been a bit hard to find some Auchentoshans, had to pull an arm and a leg to get some Alligators, (if your friend is into blends) JW double black is not available here, Ardbeg Supernova, independent bottlers are not popular here so its hard to find good independents.
Check out www.missionliquors.com and www.klwines.com They are the preeminent whisky shops for Southern Calif. Cross reference their inventory with www.thewhiskyexchange.com and go from there.
Hope that helps.

@Alanjp There's a Glenfiddich 14 year old called Rich Oak that's not in the USA. I tried it as "Project Indiana" at the Dundee Dell in Omaha last year -- it was the hit of the 8-dram tasting.

Right guys, i've got a fairly vague question i need help answering for a good friend of mine, any suggestions would be welcome! I ask as i have no idea what the travel retail market is like, especially at Heathrow! My friend asked as foillows:
"I'm off to the States in a couple of weeks and a friend of mine over there is a HUGE whisky-lover. I'm wondering what I should take over for him? Heathrow Terminal 5 has a decent enough whisky stock, right? What do you recommend? I'd like to get him something he's unlikely to find easily in LA, or that wouldn't cost him a mortgage payment if he did"
Now i've said its almost an impossible question to answer as some people like peated, some like unpeated, so many different varieties out there. But I thought i would put this out to you guys to see if there was any suggestions! Thanks in advance! Oh and she travels in 10 days, so i dont have long to get back to her!
