"Hot Bar Scotch"

0 3

Silas started a discussion

Just came back from a local popular Mexican restaurant.. I sauntered back to the bar and asked the bartender what was the most popular Scotch he served. At first he was a bit startled: after all, this was a Mexican Restaurant and Tequila was the main fare.

He reached back at brightly lit rows of liquor and pulled out a bottle of Bushmills 12 year old. I picked it up to read the label and it was so HOT I could barely keep it in my hands. I pointed it out to him and he said it must be the bar back lights which showcase the liquor.

My question: Do you think this harms the Scotch? Are back lit mirrored liquor displays always this hot? Anyone experience hot scotch?

I don't have an answer for you, but I want to add that I too am interested in this topic if anybody out there might have some expertise to share. I've always thought of whisky as following the "store in a cool, dry, dark place" model, but I admit I don't really know whether this is necessary.

Four things: 1. Bushmills is NOT Scotch! 2. I've always heard that a constant climate is best, so constant heat would be better than hot / cold / hot / cold (I suppose the bar cools off at night). 3. If these bottles are so popular, they're not on the shelf for years, so the influence of the light or heat should be minimal really. Nothing to worry about. 4. If it were a Black Bowmore, then take it away from the display asap. The Bushmills is fine there.

I've had the same thing, where the whisky has been warm in the glass when its poured due to display lighting. It can't be a good thing.
