FINALLY I'm going to visit Scotland, specifically Glasgow, Islay, Jura and maybe Arran this Aug 23rd thru Sept 4th. I will be backpacking and hopefully using bus and ferry to get around. SO, what are the must-see places to visit besides distilleries (I'm planning on visiting as many as possible =) Where are the best scotch prices in Glasgow and Islay? Any awesome pubs, restaurants or hotels- any local, rarely visited, or off the beaten path things? Any local sights worth the effort? Thanks so much for any tips!

I'm interested too. I'll be in Edinburgh and Islay mid-September.

One final question: In general where are the best scotch prices and where? on Islay? in Glasgow? or U.S. (considering duty, taxes) Thanks!

When you are in Glasgow, you have got to pay a visit to the Pot still, in Hope street. In Islay, try the lochside hotel in Bowmore, loads of whisky behind the bar and some fantastic real ale. Bowmore distillery also has a great whisky bar,.

I'll second that, The Pot Still in Glasgow is probably my favourite pub. Anywhere.

@scotchtoad in Islay it's fabulous walk from Port Ellen to Ardbeg ... (do you understand? WALK!!!) you'll see beautiful landscapes (like Lagavulin Bay, clifs, deers, scotland cows... distilleries...) 4 Km... and you'll arrive in Ardbeg... great meal and beverage. In Islay the bus stop to run early in the evening... you have to calculate very well your journay plan. Don't rush to see everything... Have a good holiday

I'll second whiskynig's recommendation to visit Duffy's bar in the Lochside hotel in Bowmore. They have a very big selection of all the different whiskies produced on Islay, they are well worth a visit.

Add another vote for the Pot Still in Glasgow,

www.thepotstill.co.uk

on a non-whisky note when in Glasgow I'm quite fond of "The Peoples Palace",

glasgowlife.org.uk/museums/our-museums/…

and the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum

glasgowlife.org.uk/museums/our-museums/…

The Scotish Youth Hostels Association Hostels on Arran in Lochranza and on Islay in Port Charlotte are both very nice and quite convienient (don't worry about the Youth thing I'm 48)

On Islay there are a couple of nice walks, one arround Finlaggan

islayinfo.com/islay_finlaggan_lords_o…

there is a great audio tour here

open2.net/scotland/…

and another couple that are not historical but very nice for an afternoon hike are Ardnave Point or The Mull of Oa..

www.islayinfo.com/walks.html

For more detail there is a not to bad guide book available on the island. Of course as Andrea said the walk from Port Ellen to Ardbeg is quite nice as well (and can take less time than the bus .. )

The Port Charlotte Hotel has a great restaurant and a really nice pub both are worth a visit.

Sorry but I can't recomend anywhere to buy whisky for two reasons.. 1) I start my trips in Glasgow and don't shop at the begining of the trip. 2) I don't find the prices in Scotland to be all that cheap, I tend to shop for rarities when I'm there.

Do make sure that you get the tourist forms to claim your VAT back, some if not most retailers will be hooked up on-line and be able to get most of the form filled out for you. There is a little tiny office in the Glasgow Airport where you drop of the completed forms, in about 6 weeks you should see a credit on your credit card statement.
