Having as many bottles open as I do, I cannot finish them in a few weeks. It takes months and up to a year. But that's simply because there are so many. It's a 'luxury problem'. The longest unfinished bottle on my shelf at this time is my Port Ellen 7th Release (although it's almost gone now...).

In my five years of (serious) whisky buying (totalling +/- 300 bottles), I have opened +/- 60 bottles and only finished 5 or so. I really like alternation and trying out new stuff, and I've never had problems with bottles going bad, so why would I care?

@Wodha, I am in the "promiscuous bottle sampler" category of whisky drinker. I have 100+ bottles open, and most of them last for years. If you count non-whisky spirits in the unfinished bottle category, I may still have some bottles around from the late 1970s. Whisky doesn't last that long in my cabinet, though.

My bottle of Lagavulin 16 right now has been open just over a year, and it has transformed for the better. A couple months ago I finished a bottle of Macallan 12 that I had open for almost two and a half years. That's the longest I've had a bottle open. On average my bottles stay open 6 months or so.

I'm in the same camp as @markjedi1 and @Victor (although I don't have 100 bottles open like @Victor, I'm on my way over BTW! ;-) ). Right now I am trying to work through what is currently open before I open something new, but that could change! :)

I have about 15 opened bottles right now. The best take longer to go empty. I like to open a newly purchase bottle right away and take 3-4 drams in the first two weeks, then I will let is settle still a bit so it can breathe and open to develop its flavors. After that I will take a sip once in a while depending on my mood. When it goes to the last 10-15%, I try to finish it quickly because there is too much air in it and it kind of remove some of the complexity. Some of my bottles have been there for almost a year now. The oldest one being my Kilchoman Autumn 2009 release (the 2nd release ever)... it is almost gone but since I cannot buy a new one (very rare and now very expensive), I hesitate to take another dram in it... but I will do it for sure... Whiskies are made to be drank, not collected.

It really depends. Some bottles can last several months based on special bottling, emotions, taste or mood while some last only for weeks. I've never finish a bottle right away. I like to go from one dram to another to compare them.

I have a dis-order that compels me to open a bottle within a couple of days of getting it into the house. As such, none of my full sized bottles are even half empty (the Auchentoshan 12 is the closest, though I have scaled back my consumption of it as I have to be frugal with my future whiskey purchases). My longest open bottle is the Glen Breton 10 which I opened just after Christmas, 2010. It is also approaching 1/2 empty status...

I rarely take longer than a month to finish a bottle once it's open. Right now I have this Brora 30 I opened on May 20th. But that's Brora 30! Kind of a special bottle. Otherwise, once I remove the foil I tend to kill them off in a few weeks. What's the longest unfinished open bottle on your shelf?
