Ah, another one of those old grains from Invergordon, this time from 1972 and bottled by Crom in 2015. Nowhere to be found nowadays, I’m afraid. My buddy Manny provided me with a sample.
It comes very close to the Invergordon 1973 from Maltbarn that I just tried, but this one is a tad more sweet. Baked apples, coconut, mandarin and even some raspberry. Hint of vanilla and pencil shaving, something I often get in Invergordon. Very good nose for such a lovely old grain.
Very spicy on the palate! Immediately pepper, cinnamon, ginger and cloves, before the fruit shows itself. Again a lovely note of raspberry that is just a bit stronger than the apples, coconut and now also a hint of banana. Some salted caramel kicks in as does some sniffing tobacco. Wow, this is very good.
In the finish, I get some chocolate, caramel, woodsmoke and sniffing tobacco.
Old grain can sometimes be such a joy. Thx, Manny!
