The German bottler Malts of Scotland has never before bottled a cask of Isle of Jura whisky. But at a recent festival, they had brought a cask sample to allo Glenn Vanbellingen, Belgian Jura-aficionado, to give it a try. Glenn advised MoS to bottle. Ergo.
The nose starts off rather closed and needs a bit of time to open up. Once that has happened, I get vanilla and a truckload of caramel, like in Werthers Originals. Behind that, I detected some citrus and coconut and white fruit. Very soft on the spice front. Inviting.
It is mouth coating and almost creamy. Immediately very sweet on white fruit, but also fiercely peppery with camphor. It has a nice salty edge and towards the end a clear hint of peat. I did take more than one swallow to really appreciate this whisky, I must admit.
The finish is medium to long, pretty sweet and finally shows that typical Jura-trait of jute bags and some dust. Pretty good.
This whisky grows, if you give it time. And it grows on you. I find the finish to be the greatest asset of this beautiful, atypical Jura. It was a good call by Glenn to have this bottled.
