The Whiskyman – aka our friend Dominiek Bouckaert – launched his Isle of Jura 1988 exclusively for the Viking Lines, the Scandinavian ferry service. Hence it is hard to come by in Belgium. Unless you have connections. Which, I am fortunate to say, I do (thanks Dominiek and Koen). I am putting it H2H with the Jura 1988 from The Whisky Agency.

Fruity nose with all kinds of berries and citrus fruit, upholstered with hazelnuts. Great farmy side. And, just as with the TWA, a bit of menthol. Sweetened farmer butter, becoming louder all the time. Leave it for five more minutes and it even becomes a bit tropical. Peach, indeed. Grand nose.

It is oily and spice (think licquorice, nutmeg and white pepper), with loads of orange zest. Quite some mint and peat, now, working wonders. White chocolat, filled with caramel. Midpalate it turns maritime with some salt and even seaweeds.

The finish is long, spicy and offers the final say to grapefruit.

What a complex dram! Even a bit better than the TWA, although not much. The Swedes should be so lucky. No more laughing at Jura, kids.

These older Juras are indeed worthy of curiosity. I have my eye on an 18 year at Total Wine. The only problem is the taxes in Washington State. They are 24%! Outrageous. I would have made the trek across the Columbia River long ago if not for the unreasonable taxes on liquor in Washington State. After the state liquor board dissolved and liquor became unregulated, the taxes went through the ceiling. Washingtonians will rebel eventually and the taxes will go down. Still, brainwashed socialists up in the Seattle area will be slow to change, even as the rest of the state is standing on their tippy toes and screaming for common sense and reason. I should say that the 24% is on top of at least 70% taxes to import the liquor in the first place, so the taxes equal about 94% (or roughly twice the cost of the liquor itself). I think taxes on liquor actually should be the same as sales taxes and no more (20% maximum). Anything more reminds me of the type of socialism that New York City has with its mayor outlawing large sodas because soda is "bad for peoples' health." Give me a break. Unreasonable taxes are bad for peoples' health! Draconian government is bad for peoples' health! Fluoride in water is bad for peoples health. GMO foods is bad for peoples' health. Chemtrail weather modification (spraying ultra small particles of aluminum and salt) is bad for peoples' health!

I was very happy to read your review of this exotic Jura. Hopefully, I will clench my teeth and pay the price for a bottle of the Battlehill 18 year. I would dearly love to buy a bottle of the Battlehill 28 year Bowmore, as well. I read a review of that bottle from a guy in Norway. It was very helpful indeed.
