The full details of the are Isle of Jura 1973 30 Year Old, oloroso sherry cask 3155, 486 bts (bottle 163).

This 30 Year Old Jura was matured on an Oloroso sherry cask and hand-picked by Michael Heads, distillery manager at the time (but has since moved back to Islay to join Ardbeg).

The nose is extremely fragrant, as the saying goes. Cedar wood, pinewood, sherry of course, marzipan, after eight (those thin mint-filled dark chocolates), dark berries, it just won’t stop! I envision myself sitting in the basement of a huge library among rare, old books. Right before I put the glass to my lips, I get a hint of salt. Wow!

The attack is impressive. Spicy sherry overload: raisins, rum, brown sugar, crushed banana. This is the kind of whisky you would love to taste while sitting, feet up, in front of the heart, the fire gently warming the soles of your feet. WON-DER-FUL.

The finish is long, but never long enough to my taste. At the death, quite a bit of salt.

After just having had the three ‘exclusive’ drams from the Paps of Jura series – that were altogether not shabby, mind you – this knocked me off my socks! Okay, so he’s double the age of the Paps, but that doesn’t mean a thing per se, or so I’m told. Well, in this case, it most definitely does. This is a grand whisky.

Nice review Mark, my notes are very similar as it happens. Glad you enjoyed it, a peach of a cask.
