I am sure you are familiar with the Solist range of Kavalan, with those grand releases on all kinds of casks including bourbon, sherry, wine and port. New is this Kavalan Port Oak, not to be confused with the Kavalan Solist Port Cask at cask strength which is always at cask strength. This is a new release, only available in Taiwan and only released in miniatures at this point, cut to 50%. It was a gift from a friend when I visited him in January. Dark & sweet on raisins and rad fruit, plums and tobacco leaves. It even has a dirty edge, surely delivered by the cask. Raspberries and strawberries command your attention. Round and creamy. It is very oily and surprisingly spicy. I get cloves, nutmeg and candied ginger. It turns very dry very quickly. So much so, that I am inclined to reach for water. Stury fellow! The alcohol is just a tad too prominent for me. The finish is long and spicy, but honeysweet with another herbal, dirty side to it that I cannot quite pinpoint. A flavor bomb from Taiwan. I suspect it will not be long before full bottles are released.
