Lagavulin 1996 Distillers Edition is apparently the signature 16 year old with a sherry finish. It's been given a finish in Pedro Ximénez dessert sherry casks. I didn't know that before I started the tasting so it really explained a lot to me afterwards.

1996 Distillers Edition was very much a sweet and subtle version of Lagavulin's smoky flavors. I'd like to compare this with the movie Porno (in the making at the moment). Simply because Lagavulin 16 year old got a reference of Trainspotting. Porno is the sequel for Trainspotting and to be based on the novel by Irvine Welsh, just like it's predecessor.

Without knowing the outcome of the movie, I dare to compare this '96 Distillers Edition to it. Hoping that the movie directed by Danny Boyle and adapted by John Hodge will be nearly as good as their adaptation of Trainspotting for silver screen was. Just like this DE was nearly as good as the signature 16 year old by Lagavulin.

Nose: Very interesting but not the best part, the smoke disappears quickly and gives space for sweet peat and wood.

Taste: Not as rich as Lagavulin 16 yrs, roasted malt mixed with very powerful iodine peat and syrupy flavors. The smoke attacks only at the end before the big finish.

Finish: Very long-lasting with traces of oak, smoke, peat and wee spices. The kind you want to chew forever.

Balance: Full and rich, the richness comes across towards the end. I'd recommend this one especially for people who are starting to explore smoky whiskys.
