Archives, the Whiskybase shop’s label, launched its Second Release, consisting of an 11 Year Old Highland Park as well as this 13 Year Old Laphroaig. Just as with the HP, the label here says 13 ½ Year Old, because it was distilled on 14 May 1998 and bottled in December 2011. Funny, no?
The nose is fresh and sweet, very much so, on lemon and vanilla with a pinch of mint. Quite some ashes and sea weed. Sweet peat. A good dose of iodine. No surprises, but very attractive.
The attack is powerful with peat, white pepper and a lot of brine. Boy, this is salty! But soooo good. Midpalate, the sweetness emerges. Liquorice, lemon and again vanilla. Some ashes too. Actually, this is a confirmation of the nose.
The finish is good and long and makes you all fuzzy inside. Peat and pepper triumph.
This is a Laffie as a Laffie is supposed to be. Laphroaig fans will appreciate this bottling. But hurry up, since only 80 bottles were created.
