Laphroaig 15 vs 18

Many questions for these two, please jump in with whatever y could answer. First, is the newly released 15 similar to the old 15? How is the 18 compared to this new 15? Is it true that both are in their ways to extinction? If so, would you stock up to enjoy them... buy as a collectors item, or to re sell? I can get them at $79.99 and $89.99. I'm not a big fan of Lap 10 but I enjoyed the Triple Wood and I love the Laga 16. Thanks and slainte.

Sounds like pretty reasonable prices. If you like it, buy it. These are unlikely to be useful as investment bottles, as they will probably be readily available, or something similar. The reason to stock up would be if you don't think you'll be able to find it where you live, or if you think the price will rise higher than you'll be able to pay in the future.

While I have no problems with people who buy as an investment, I don't think these bottles are the ones to look at for this.

Personally I don't but with intent to sell. I will pick up stuff for others, but not for a profit. Getting a couple extra with intent to trade for something you don't have access to, that often works out well.

@Nozinan thanks for the advice. I never bought a single bottle for investment. But I recently read that the 15 will disappear soon and so the 18... Last year I remember somebody saying that the 15 was selling for $250 before the new release came. But I have no idea where to sell and how easy it is. Yes I'd say I could get one of each and wait a year to see if I sell them or simply drink and enjoy them. But I don't plan to get rich from whisky unless I start a new distillery. Anybody interested??? :)

If they will be discontinuing the 15 and 18, I would pick up a couple if I liked Laphroaig. I have only ever had the Quarter cask and do enjoy it. I would love to try something at cask strength like the 10.

If I had to make a quick decision I would probably buy one more than I wanted, open it and try it. If I liked it I would keep them, and if I wasn't enthused I'd return the rest, unless I knew someone who wanted it.

If in fact the prices you are seeing are way below the going rate, I would jump on it because those are 2 expressions you'll likely make someone very happy with.

@Nozinan The end of the 18 is just a rumor... I think it was the whisky.com reviewer who mentioned they actually released the new 15 to cover the fact they're running out of 18. I guess we will have 15 for at least a year, then who knows if they'll market a 202nd Anniversary release... but yes, one of them I'll buy for a very special gift, the rest, probably I'll get one and one, if the wallet allows.

I thought the rumor on the 18's demise came from certain retailers clearing it out a year or so ago. Binny's, I remember, had them all down to $65—and I think that was indeed billed as a clearance price, not just a sale price. I was just in a Binny's this week, though, and the 18 was fully stocked and back up to a normal price ($75).

MyAnnoyingOpinions just reviewed the new 15, with comparisons to the old: myannoyingopinions.com/2015/09/…

@OlJas Clearance sale on whisky sounds insane. Here they would crank the prices if the stock got low or if the bottle was discontinued!

I suppose the new 15 is collectible as anniversary release, if nothing else? Myself, I'd get the 18 purely because it's bottled at 48%, while the 15 is bottled at 43%.

And @Nozinan has a fair point about making someone very happy with prices like that.

Now I found the 15 at $59. I believe beyond the mixed reviews I should definitely get more than one...
