David Stirk selected this cask for his Exclusive Malts range, you know, the one with the bird on the label that has absolutely nothing to do with the whisky. The range consists of single casks at cask strength. In this case a 20 Year Old Laphroaig at 50,6% ABV.

What a surprising nose! Fresh and very much alive. I check the label again. Yep, this one is twenty years old. It seems much younger. A strange sweetness, like banana chips. A slice of smoked ham, but only a thin slice. Very grassy. Quite some camphor. And something that I cannot quite identify. It is neither fruit nor sugar. Almost chemical. But nice. And unexpected, because it is a far cry from the typical Laphroaig profile.

It is creamy and very soft. Only midly peppered and lightly salted. Fresh and sweet, again. Citrus lets itself be known. But I discern mostly vanilla and granulated sugar. Hardly any oak. This is truly a harum-scarum Laphroaig. A babyface Lafffie.

The powerful finish, medium in length, allows some more typical Laffie to shine through, i.e. peat, salt and citrus.

An uncomplicated, low on complexity but very nice, swashbuckler.
