Thanks to my good friend Chris Lauriers – whisky ambassador for Belgium – I have the opportunity to try no less than 10 – ten! – Feis Ile bottlings from Laphroaig in a row from 2007 until 2016. This is going to be a trip to remember.

This is the 2011 release, dubbed the Ileach Edition in honor of John Campbell, the first Master Distiller at Laphroaig that was born on Islay.

While the nose starts with loads of peat smoke, this quickly fades to make room for oranges and tobacco, followed by brown sugar and oyster sap. But that also needs to move over for salted bacon on the barbecue. And yes, this is wonderful!

The palate follows through on the nose: smoky at first, then sweet and then salty. It goes up and down, but is nicely balanced. Some pepper and nutmeg provide a spicy touch. Midpalate it turns quite dry, though.

That drying effect continues in the long finish, but then it again turns surprisingly sweet on vanilla and honey.

Anoter great Laffie that brings honor to the Cairdeas series.
