Ledaig is my favorite peaty whisky from Mull (okay, Mark, that was kinda silly). The Bonding Dram, a Belgian webshop (in collaboration with Dim’s Dram and Comptoir Des Vins) selected this first fill sherry cask from the warehouses of Signatory and had it bottled in their Un-Chillfilered Collection. You know what that means: no chill filtration and bottled at a drinking strength of 46%. It was distilled on 24 November 2004 and bottled on 18 March 2015. The nose immediately offers what I can only describe as dirty sherry. Simply delicious! Sweet versus salt with some earthy notes as referee. Sweet: raisins and toffe; salt: stockfish and oyster sap. The earthy notes are undoubtedly from the peat. Flints? On the palate, the salt arrives first. Veritable brine and smoked mackerel, wrapped in a smoky jacket. The sweetness seems like an afterthought, although it is quite beautiful with its raisins and blood oranges. Maybe even some dried plums. The second sip brings the sweetness first. How can this be? I even get some tobacco leaves. This is very nice. The finish is medium long, but to my taste it might have been just a tad longer. This is Ledaig at its best. Only 45 EUR. Steal of a deal, so I got me a bottle.
