The Whisky Jury, a relatively young Belgian bottler, has just released his very first Ledaig. Well, he does have only 8 releases out so far, including 3 Ben Nevis, 2 Laphroaig (albeit under the name Williamson) and 2 Caol Ila. This Ledaig – basically peated Tobermory – was distilled in 2010 and is a single cask at cask strength. So pale.

Hurrah! Here we go again. I’ve only just put my nose in the glass and already I realize we’re in for a treat. The typical dirty notes of Ledaig are there: sheep stable, plasticine and smoked bacon. Some iodine and even wet rocks and then suddenly some very candy-like notes of vanilla, jelly beans and white chocolate. Olive oil and young apples make it picture perfect.

It very creamy on the palate! Molten white chocolate with a (big) twist. Perfect strength, by the way. Sweet versus salty with a beautiful smokiness. Stock fish, green olives, apples, vanilla and a hint of lemon juice. Ashes and pepper in the background.

The finish confirmed that this is a grand malt, very complete. Long, smoky, warm and evolves from salty to sweet. Candy floss at the death.

What a lovely Ledaig, just the way I like it. 79 EUR? Take my money!
