I recently was offered the possibility to try no less than nine Ledaig from Gordon & Macphail’s Connoisseurs Choice head-to-head, all distilled between 1990 and 2004 and bottled between 2011 and 2017. Well, that was an opportunity I could not pass up. Let’s give those a go. This is the Ledaig that was distilled in 1999 and bottled in 2015. It matured on Refill American Hogsheads.

On the nose, it’s quite funky I must say. Farmy notes, rotting plants, burnt grass and peatsmoke, decorated with a bit of crème brûlée and chestnuts.

The arrival is very soft, bitter and sweet at the same time on barley sugars and grapefruit juice. The smokiness of the peat suddenly becomes very outspoken. I quite like that.

The finish is again rather short, very smoking and warm with notes of nuts and hay.

Lovely funky nose, it’s true, but other that that this is a rather regular Ledaig – nothing wrong with that, to be clear.
