I recently was offered the possibility to try no less than nine Ledaig from Gordon & Macphail’s Connoisseurs Choice head-to-head, all distilled between 1990 and 2004 and bottled between 2011 and 2017. Well, that was an opportunity I could not pass up. Let’s give those a go. This is the Ledaig that was distilled in 1990 and bottled in 2008. It matured on refill sherry casks.

The nose is softly smoky – less peaty than I expected to be honest – on mostly toffee and apple sauce with a hint of lime peel and puffed chestnuts. Rather docile.

It is surprisingly sweet on the palate and soft with just a hint of peat. Not as ‘dirty’ as I am used to from this house. Nevertheless, it makes for a very quaffable and pleasant Ledaig. White chocolate, some garden herbs and soft notes of the wood.

The finish is medium long, leaving mostly the wood to speak.

This is a rather middle-of-the-road Ledaig, flawless but very forgettable if you know what I mean.
